❤️ THE EMPATHY MAP™
Can You Understand Your Partner Without Agreeing With Them?
You don't have to agree with your partner to understand their experience.
And understanding your partner doesn't mean saying they are right.
It means becoming curious enough to see what may be happening underneath their reaction.
Because what your partner does on the surface isn't always what they are experiencing underneath.
Anger may be protecting hurt. Withdrawal may be protecting overwhelm. Criticism may be protecting loneliness. Control may be protecting fear. Pursuing may be protecting a fear of disconnection.
The Empathy Map™ helps you look beneath the behaviour — without losing sight of your own experience, needs or boundaries.
The question isn't:
“Who is right?”
The question is:
“Can I understand what this experience might be like for them?”
🧭 WHAT IS THE EMPATHY MAP™?
The Empathy Map™ is a Merkl relationship tool for slowing down the assumptions we make about our partner and becoming curious about what may be happening underneath the conflict.
When couples are stuck, each person can become focused on their own experience:
“Look what they did.”
“They don't understand me.”
“If they would just change…”
But connection requires something more.
It requires the ability to hold two experiences at once:
My experience matters.
My partner's experience matters.
Our relationship matters.
The Empathy Map™ helps you move from judging the reaction to understanding the person behind it.

❤️ THE EMPATHY MAP™
MY WORLD → YOUR WORLD → OUR RELATIONSHIP
MY WORLD | MY PARTNER'S WORLD | |
What am I feeling? | What am I experiencing right now? | What might they be experiencing? |
What am I afraid of? | What am I protecting? | What might they be protecting? |
What do I need? | What do I need them to understand? | What might they need me to understand? |
What meaning am I making? | What am I assuming? | What might they be assuming? |
What do I want? | What am I hoping for? | What might they be hoping for? |
The goal isn't to decide whose world is correct.
The goal is to become curious about both.
🧠 THE FIVE LAYERS OF EMPATHY
The Empathy Map™ takes you beneath the surface.
1. FEELING
What am I feeling?
What emotion is here right now?
Anger? Hurt? Fear? Loneliness? Disappointment? Overwhelm?
2. FEAR
What am I afraid of?
What might I be afraid will happen?
What might my partner be afraid will happen?
3. PROTECTION
What am I protecting?
Am I protecting my dignity?
My independence?
My sense of safety?
My connection?
What might my partner be protecting?
4. NEED
What do I need?
What do I need my partner to understand?
What might they need from me?
5. MEANING
What story am I telling myself about what is happening?
What am I assuming their behaviour means?
What might they be assuming my behaviour means?
This is often where couples discover something important:
The same event can have completely different meanings for two people.
🔎 LOOK BENEATH THE BEHAVIOUR
Couples often fight about what happened on the surface.
But underneath the behaviour, there may be a very different emotional experience.
What you see | What may be underneath |
Anger | Hurt, fear, feeling unheard |
Criticism | Loneliness, disappointment, longing |
Defensiveness | Feeling blamed or unsafe |
Withdrawal | Overwhelm, fear, need for space |
Pursuing | Fear of disconnection |
Control | Fear and uncertainty |
Silence | Overwhelm or not knowing what to say |
Irritation | Unmet needs or accumulated resentment |
This does not mean every behaviour has a hidden good intention.
And understanding what may be underneath a behaviour doesn't excuse harmful behaviour.
It gives you more information.
Understanding your reaction is not the same as excusing your behaviour.
💭 THE SAME EVENT. TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS.
Imagine one partner comes home and is quiet.
One person thinks:
“They need some space.”
The other thinks:
“They're upset with me.”
Same behaviour.
Different meaning.
Different emotional response.
One person moves closer.
The other pulls away.
Now the pattern begins.
This is why couples can argue about the same issue repeatedly without ever feeling understood.
They aren't always fighting about the event.
They may be fighting about:
What the event means.
❤️ YOUR PARTNER'S REACTION ISN'T ALWAYS ABOUT YOU
Sometimes your partner's reaction is connected to something happening between you.
Sometimes it is connected to what they learned long before you met.
Sometimes it is both.
Their history, expectations, attachment patterns, fears and previous experiences can influence how they interpret what is happening now.
The same is true for you.
This doesn't mean:
“It's not my fault, so it's not my responsibility.”
It creates a more useful question:
“What is happening between us — and what part am I responsible for?”
That question moves a couple away from blame and toward responsibility.
🐺 EMPATHY AND THE PROTECTION WOLF™
When we feel hurt, rejected, threatened or afraid, our protective instincts can become stronger.
This is where the Protection Wolf™ may take over.
Protection Wolf™ says:
“I need to protect myself.”
You may become defensive.
You may criticize.
You may withdraw.
You may pursue harder.
You may try to control the conversation.
You may keep proving your point.
The behaviour can look different from person to person.
But underneath it may be a similar need:
“I need to feel safe.”
The Empathy Map™ gives you another option.
Instead of immediately asking:
“Why are they acting like this?”
try:
“What might they be experiencing right now?”
And then:
“What am I experiencing right now?”
That is where curiosity can interrupt the cycle.
❤️ EMPATHY DOESN'T MEAN LOSING YOURSELF
Healthy empathy is not:
“Your feelings matter more than mine.”
It is:
“Your feelings matter, and mine matter too.”
You can care about your partner without accepting disrespect.
You can understand their fear without giving up your boundary.
You can recognize their pain without taking responsibility for everything they feel.
You can listen without agreeing.
You can have empathy and boundaries.
You can disagree and remain connected.
Understanding your partner doesn't require abandoning yourself.

🔄 EMPATHY IS TWO-WAY
A healthy relationship cannot depend on only one person becoming more understanding.
Both partners need room to be seen.
I want to feel safe.
I want to matter.
I want to feel loved.
I don't want to lose myself.
I don't want to lose you.
These needs can sometimes appear to conflict.
One person may protect themselves through independence.
The other may protect themselves through closeness.
One may ask for space.
The other may experience space as abandonment.
One may want to talk immediately.
The other may need time to regulate.
Neither experience automatically makes one partner right and the other wrong.
The work is learning how to understand the difference without turning the difference into a threat.
🧠 EMPATHY IS NOT MIND-READING
You cannot know exactly what your partner is thinking.
So don't assume.
Ask.
Instead of:
“You're obviously angry with me.”
Try:
“You seem quieter than usual. What's happening for you?”
Instead of:
“You don't care.”
Try:
“I'm feeling disconnected from you. Can you help me understand where you are right now?”
Instead of:
“You just want to control everything.”
Try:
“What are you worried might happen if we don't do it this way?”
Assume less. Ask more.
❤️ FIVE QUESTIONS THAT CREATE EMPATHY
When you feel disconnected, slow down and ask:
1. What might my partner be feeling?
Don't diagnose.
Get curious.
2. What might they be afraid of?
What could they be trying to protect?
3. What might they need?
Reassurance? Respect? Space? Connection? To feel heard?
4. What meaning might they be making?
What might they believe your behaviour means?
5. What do they need me to understand?
This question can change the entire conversation.
🗣️ HOW TO USE THE EMPATHY MAP™ IN A CONFLICT
You don't need to solve everything immediately.
Start by slowing the conversation down.
STEP 1 — NOTICE
“We're getting caught in the same pattern.”
STEP 2 — REGULATE
Pause.
Breathe.
Notice what is happening inside you before reacting.
STEP 3 — GET CURIOUS
“Help me understand what is happening for you.”
STEP 4 — REFLECT
“So you're feeling ___ because you experienced ___.”
STEP 5 — CHECK
“Did I get that right?”
STEP 6 — SHARE YOUR WORLD
After making room for their experience:
“Can I tell you what was happening for me?”
STEP 7 — FIND THE PATTERN
Move from:
ME vs. YOU
to:
US vs. THE PATTERN
The goal isn't to win the argument.
The goal is to understand what keeps happening between you.
🔥 WHEN EMPATHY FEELS IMPOSSIBLE
Sometimes empathy feels impossible because you are too activated to be curious.
You may be thinking:
“Why should I care about their feelings when they clearly don't care about mine?”
That's a signal.
You may not need more empathy in that moment.
You may need regulation first.
When you're overwhelmed, it can become much harder to listen, interpret accurately and respond thoughtfully.
Sometimes the most relational thing you can do is pause.
Not punish.
Not disappear.
Not threaten.
Pause with the intention of returning.
“I care about us. I'm too activated to have this conversation well right now. I need some time to settle down, and I want to come back to this.”
That is very different from using distance as punishment.
🐺 WHICH WOLF ARE YOU FEEDING?
In difficult moments, ask yourself:
“Am I protecting myself right now — or protecting the relationship?”
You may not be able to choose your first emotional reaction.
But you can create space between the feeling and what you do next.
🐺 PROTECTION WOLF™
“I need to protect myself.”
❤️ LOVE WOLF™
“I need to protect my relationship.”
Love Wolf™ doesn't mean blind trust.
It doesn't mean tolerating harmful behaviour.
It doesn't mean becoming smaller.
It means asking:
“What response protects what I love without abandoning myself?”
🧭 THE EMPATHY MAP™ + THE MERKL RELATIONSHIP MAP™
The Empathy Map™ is part of the larger Merkl Relationship Map™.
The Relationship Map describes the movement from protection toward connection:
PROTECTION → AWARENESS → RESPONSIBILITY → CONNECTION → INTIMACY → LOVE
The Empathy Map™ helps you slow down inside that journey.
It helps you ask:
What am I experiencing?
What might my partner be experiencing?
What are we creating together?
This creates an important shift:
Instead of:
“What's wrong with you?”
Ask:
“What's happening between us?”
💡 EMPATHY CAN CHANGE THE QUESTION
Instead of:
“Why won't they change?”
Ask:
“What might they be protecting?”
Instead of:
“Why are they so needy?”
Ask:
“What might they be afraid of losing?”
Instead of:
“Why do they always need space?”
Ask:
“What happens inside them when conflict becomes intense?”
Instead of:
“Why can't they understand me?”
Ask:
“Have I helped them understand what this means to me?”
Better questions don't magically solve a relationship.
But they create a better starting point.

🌱 YOU DON'T HAVE TO SEE THE WORLD THE SAME WAY
Healthy couples don't necessarily experience everything the same way.
You may have different personalities.
Different histories.
Different needs.
Different ways of coping.
Different ideas about what makes a relationship feel safe.
The goal isn't to erase those differences.
The goal is to understand them well enough that they stop becoming threats to the relationship.
Difference can create distance.
Or difference can create curiosity.
Balance is everything.
❤️ THE EMPATHY SHIFT
Instead of:
“You never listen to me.”
Try:
“When I don't feel heard, I start to feel alone. I need to know that what I'm saying matters to you.”
Instead of:
“You're always trying to control me.”
Try:
“When you ask me repeatedly, I experience it as pressure. Can you tell me what you're afraid might happen?”
Instead of:
“You don't care about me.”
Try:
“I'm feeling disconnected from you. I want to feel close again.”
The second version doesn't guarantee your partner will respond differently.
But it gives the relationship a better chance.
🤝 EMPATHY DOESN'T MEAN TAKING SIDES
Relationship counselling isn't about deciding which partner is the problem.
It's about understanding the people and the pattern between them.
Sometimes one partner has more responsibility for a particular behaviour.
Sometimes both partners contribute to the cycle in different ways.
Sometimes serious boundaries need to be addressed.
Empathy does not erase accountability.
Empathy and responsibility can exist together.
❤️ THE DEEPEST FORM OF EMPATHY
The deepest form of empathy isn't:
“I agree with you.”
It is:
“I can see you.”
I can see that you're hurting.
I can see that you're afraid.
I can see that something matters deeply to you.
I can see that your reaction is trying to tell me something.
And I can still have my own experience.
That is where empathy becomes connection rather than self-abandonment.
🌿 FROM TWO WORLDS TO ONE RELATIONSHIP
You and your partner may never experience the world in exactly the same way.
You don't have to.
The goal isn't to create two identical people.
It is to create a relationship where both people can say:
“I can be myself here.”
“You can be yourself here.”
“We can understand each other even when we disagree.”
“We can protect the relationship without losing ourselves.”
That is the movement from two separate worlds toward a shared relationship.

🧍 MY WORLD
What was I feeling?
What was I afraid of?
What was I protecting?
What did I need?
What meaning did I make of my partner's behaviour?
Then consider:
❤️ MY PARTNER'S WORLD
What might they have been feeling?
What might they have been afraid of?
What might they have been protecting?
What might they have needed?
What meaning might they have made of my behaviour?
Then ask the most important question:
WHAT WAS HAPPENING BETWEEN US?
That's where the relationship pattern begins to become visible.
❓ THE EMPATHY MAP™ — FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is The Empathy Map™?
The Empathy Map™ is a Merkl relationship tool that helps partners look beneath behaviour and consider each person's feelings, fears, needs, assumptions and hopes.
Does empathy mean agreeing with my partner?
No. Understanding is not agreement. You can understand your partner's experience while maintaining your own perspective and boundaries.
Does empathy mean putting my partner first?
No. Healthy empathy makes room for both people. Your experience matters too.
What if my partner's behaviour is hurtful?
Understanding what may be underneath behaviour does not excuse it. Empathy and accountability belong together.
What if I don't understand why my partner reacts the way they do?
Start with curiosity rather than certainty. Ask questions instead of assuming you know what is happening inside them.
What if my partner won't talk?
You cannot force empathy or connection. You can work on your own responses, communicate your willingness to understand and create opportunities for safer conversations.
Can empathy help with recurring relationship conflict?
Yes. Empathy can help couples move beyond the surface argument and recognize the emotional pattern underneath it.
Is empathy enough to repair a relationship?
Not always. Some relationships need deeper work around trust, communication, attachment, boundaries, resentment, betrayal or recurring conflict.
Empathy can be an important beginning.
❤️ START WHERE YOU ARE
You don't have to understand everything about your relationship to begin changing it.
You don't have to become perfect.
You don't have to agree on everything.
You don't have to solve the whole relationship today.
Start with one question:
“What might my partner be experiencing that I haven't understood yet?”
Then ask:
“What do I need them to understand about me?”
Because connection doesn't require two people who think the same way.
It requires two people who are willing to understand.
Understand yourself. Understand your partner. Change the pattern.
