🐺 PROTECTION WOLF™ VS 🐺LOVE WOLF™

Are You Protecting Yourself or Your Relationship?

Have you ever reacted to your partner in a way you later regretted?

You may not have been trying to hurt your relationship.

You may have been trying to protect yourself.

Which Wolf Are You Feeding?

When we feel hurt, rejected, threatened, betrayed, misunderstood or afraid, our nervous system can move quickly into protection.

We may fight.

We may blame.

We may defend ourselves.

We may criticize.

We may withdraw.

We may demand reassurance.

We may try to control what happens next.

We may shut down completely.

These reactions can feel automatic.

But they are not the whole story.

The question is not:

“Why am I like this?”

It is:

“What am I trying to protect — and is the way I'm protecting it helping my relationship or hurting it?”

This is where the Protection Wolf™ and Love Wolf™ can help.

🐺 THE TWO WOLVES

PROTECTION WOLF™

“I need to protect myself.”

LOVE WOLF™

“I need to protect my relationship.”

Both wolves represent something deeply human:

the need to feel safe.

The difference is what happens next.

Protection Wolf™ focuses on protecting the self from perceived threat.

Love Wolf™ focuses on protecting the relationship without abandoning the self.

Neither wolf means you're a bad person.

And Love Wolf™ does not mean being weak, passive or endlessly accommodating.

The goal isn't to get rid of your Protection Wolf™.

The goal is to recognize when it has taken over — and learn that you have another choice.

🛡️ PROTECTION WOLF™

“I need to protect myself.”

Your Protection Wolf™ developed for a reason.

It learned that something needed protecting.

Maybe you learned:

  • “I can't trust people.”

  • “If I don't defend myself, I'll get hurt.”

  • “I have to be strong.”

  • “No one listens unless I get angry.”

  • “I can't let my guard down.”

  • “If I give in, I'll lose myself.”

  • “If I don't pursue this, I'll be abandoned.”

  • “I need to make them understand.”

So when something feels threatening, Protection Wolf™ can take over.

You might:

  • become angry

  • criticize

  • blame

  • defend yourself

  • interrupt

  • become controlling

  • demand answers

  • keep score

  • bring up the past

  • withdraw

  • shut down

  • become sarcastic

  • punish with silence

  • interrogate

  • become rigid about being right

  • create distance

  • stop being vulnerable

Underneath the reaction may be something much more vulnerable:

“I'm afraid.”

“I don't matter.”

“I don't feel loved.”

“I could be rejected.”

“I might lose you.”

“I might lose myself.”

“I don't feel safe.”

“I don't know how to reach you.”

Your Protection Wolf™ may be trying to solve a real problem.

But sometimes the strategy it chooses creates another one.

❤️ LOVE WOLF™

“I need to protect my relationship.”

Love Wolf™ isn't about pretending everything is okay.

It isn't blind trust.

It isn't people-pleasing.

It isn't giving up your boundaries.

It isn't tolerating disrespect.

It isn't agreeing with your partner all the time.

And it isn't staying in a relationship that is unsafe.

Love Wolf™ means protecting what you love without losing yourself.

It asks:

“What can I do right now that protects the relationship?”

That might mean:

  • pausing before reacting

  • regulating yourself

  • listening

  • becoming curious

  • taking responsibility

  • telling the truth

  • expressing a need

  • showing empathy

  • setting a healthy boundary

  • repairing after conflict

  • staying emotionally present

  • choosing vulnerability

  • asking for what you need

  • considering your partner's experience

  • choosing connection over winning

Love Wolf™ doesn't mean you stop having fear.

It means fear doesn't have to make every decision.

❤️ PROTECTION VS. LOVE

Protection Wolf™

Love Wolf™

“I need to protect myself.”

“I need to protect my relationship.”

Defend

Understand

Blame

Take responsibility

Control

Communicate

Criticize

Be curious

Withdraw

Stay connected

Punish

Repair

Prove I'm right

Understand what is happening

Protect against vulnerability

Choose appropriate vulnerability

Keep score

Look at the pattern

“Me vs. You”

“Us vs. the Pattern”

React

Choose

This doesn't mean one partner is the Protection Wolf™ and the other is always the Love Wolf™.

Both partners can move between them.

Sometimes within the same conversation.

🧠 WHY YOUR REACTION CAN FEEL SO FAST

When something feels emotionally threatening, your protective response can happen faster than your thoughtful response.

That is why you can sometimes hear yourself saying something and think:

“Why did I just say that?”

Or:

“I knew I shouldn't have said that, but I couldn't stop myself.”

Your reaction may have been protecting you from something you experienced as threatening.

Understanding that reaction can be incredibly useful.

But there is an important distinction:

Understanding your reaction is not the same as excusing your behaviour.

You can understand why you reacted and still take responsibility for what you did next.

That is where change begins.

🔄 THE PROTECTION CYCLE

One partner feels hurt.

↓

They feel threatened.

↓

Protection Wolf™ activates.

↓

They criticize, blame, withdraw, defend, pursue or control.

↓

Their partner feels threatened.

↓

Their Protection Wolf™ activates.

↓

They react.

↓

The first partner feels even less safe.

↓

Both partners protect themselves.

↓

Connection decreases.

This can happen so quickly that couples eventually stop seeing the pattern.

They only see each other.

“You're the problem.”

“No, you're the problem.”

But often the bigger problem is the pattern between them.

🤝 US VS. THE PATTERN

One of the most important shifts in relationship work is moving from:

ME VS. YOU

to:

US VS. THE PATTERN

Your partner may not be your enemy.

And you may not be your partner's enemy.

You may both be responding to the same cycle in different ways.

One partner pursues.

The other withdraws.

One gets louder.

The other shuts down.

One demands reassurance.

The other feels controlled.

One asks for space.

The other experiences abandonment.

Then each person's reaction confirms the other's fear.

The pattern becomes self-reinforcing.

The goal isn't to decide who started it.

The goal is to recognize what happens next.

🧭 WHAT ARE YOU REALLY PROTECTING?

The next time you notice yourself becoming activated, pause.

Ask yourself:

What am I feeling?

Anger?

Fear?

Hurt?

Rejection?

Loneliness?

Disappointment?

What am I afraid will happen?

Will I be rejected?

Will I be abandoned?

Will I lose myself?

Will I be controlled?

Will I not matter?

Will I be hurt again?

What am I trying to protect?

My dignity?

My safety?

My independence?

My connection?

My relationship?

My sense of being loved?

And finally:

Is the way I'm protecting myself helping create the relationship I want?

That question can change everything.

🐺 WHICH WOLF ARE YOU FEEDING?

Every interaction gives you another opportunity to strengthen a pattern.

Protection Wolf™ gets stronger when you:

Fight. Blame. Defend. Control. Withdraw. Punish. Disconnect.

Love Wolf™ gets stronger when you:

Pause. Understand. Own. Communicate. Connect. Repair. Choose.

You won't always choose perfectly.

You will still get triggered.

You will still become angry.

You will still need space sometimes.

You will still have moments when Protection Wolf™ gets there first.

That doesn't mean you've failed.

The important moment is what you do next.

❤️ THE MOMENT OF CHOICE

You don't choose your first feeling.

You can choose what you do next.

When you notice Protection Wolf™ appearing, try asking:

1. What am I feeling?

2. What am I afraid of?

3. What am I trying to protect?

4. What might my partner be feeling?

5. What do I need right now?

6. What does my relationship need right now?

7. What can I do that protects both?

That last question is important.

Because healthy relationships aren't built by choosing:

Me OR You.

They are built by learning to hold:

I + WE.

⚖️ PROTECTING YOURSELF AND PROTECTING YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Love Wolf™ does not ask you to abandon yourself.

You can say:

“I need a break, but I will come back and talk about this.”

You can say:

“That behaviour isn't okay with me, and I still want to find a way forward.”

You can say:

“I'm angry, but I don't want to hurt you.”

You can say:

“I need you to understand my experience, and I also want to understand yours.”

You can say:

“I don't agree with you, but I want to stay connected while we work this out.”

That is not weakness.

That is relational strength.

🧠 YOUR PROTECTION WOLF™ IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING

Your protective reactions contain information.

Anger may tell you:

“Something matters here.”

Withdrawal may tell you:

“I'm overwhelmed.”

Control may tell you:

“I don't feel safe.”

Defensiveness may tell you:

“I feel blamed or misunderstood.”

Pursuing may tell you:

“I'm afraid of losing connection.”

The reaction is information.

It isn't necessarily the solution.

Instead of asking only:

“How do I stop reacting?”

You can begin asking:

“What is this reaction trying to tell me?”

Then:

“What can I do with that information?”

💞 WHEN YOUR PARTNER TRIGGERS YOU

Sometimes the hardest part is that the person you love can trigger the very thing they most want to help you heal.

Your partner asks for closeness.

You feel pressured.

You ask for space.

Your partner feels abandoned.

Your partner becomes angry.

You feel unsafe.

You defend yourself.

They feel rejected.

They pursue harder.

You withdraw further.

Neither person necessarily intended to create this.

Both may be trying to help the relationship using strategies that no longer work.

This is why the goal isn't:

“How do I fix my partner?”

It is:

“How do we understand the pattern we're caught in?”

🗺️ WHERE THIS FITS IN THE MERKL RELATIONSHIP MAP™

Protection Wolf™ and Love Wolf™ are part of a larger journey.

PROTECTION → AWARENESS → RESPONSIBILITY → CONNECTION → INTIMACY → LOVE

Protection

Something feels threatening.

Awareness

You recognize what is happening.

Responsibility

You take ownership of what you do next.

Connection

You begin responding rather than reacting.

Intimacy

You become safer and more emotionally available to each other.

Love

You learn to choose the relationship while still being yourself.

This is the movement from Protection → Connection.

You don't have to fix everything at once.

Start by noticing the wolf.

🐺 A SIMPLE QUESTION TO USE IN REAL LIFE

When you notice yourself getting activated, ask:

“Am I protecting myself right now — or protecting the relationship?”

Then ask:

“What would Love Wolf™ do next?”

Maybe it is listening.

Maybe it is speaking honestly.

Maybe it is taking responsibility.

Maybe it is setting a boundary.

Maybe it is taking a regulated pause.

Maybe it is reaching back toward your partner.

The answer will depend on the moment.

Love Wolf™ isn't one particular behaviour.

It's the intention to protect what matters without abandoning yourself.

❤️ IF YOUR PARTNER IS IN PROTECTION MODE

You can't force someone else into Love Wolf™.

Trying to control their reaction can activate more Protection Wolf™.

Instead, when appropriate, you can try:

“I think we're both getting activated. Can we slow this down?”

Or:

“I don't want us to fight each other. I want us to figure out what's happening between us.”

Or simply:

“What do you think your Protection Wolf™ is trying to protect right now?”

Sometimes changing the question changes the conversation.

🚫 LOVE WOLF™ DOES NOT MEAN STAYING NO MATTER WHAT

Healthy connection still requires boundaries.

Love Wolf™ does not mean:

  • tolerating abuse

  • ignoring betrayal

  • accepting disrespect

  • suppressing your needs

  • giving up your identity

  • pretending you're okay

  • accepting unsafe behaviour

  • staying in a relationship simply because you love someone

Protecting your relationship and protecting yourself can coexist.

In a healthy relationship, love does not require self-abandonment.

💡 THE DEEPEST SHIFT

The goal isn't to become someone who never gets angry.

It isn't to become someone who never gets triggered.

It isn't to become endlessly calm.

And it isn't to eliminate your Protection Wolf™.

Your protective instincts are part of being human.

The deeper goal is to develop enough awareness that you can recognize:

“My Protection Wolf™ is here.”

And then have enough choice to say:

“I don't have to let it lead.”

That is the shift from reaction to responsibility.

From protection to connection.

From Me vs. You to Us vs. the Pattern.

🐺 WHICH WOLF ARE YOU FEEDING?

The next time you feel triggered by your partner, pause before deciding what the moment means.

Ask:

What am I feeling?

What am I afraid of?

What am I trying to protect?

What does my partner need?

What do I need?

And:

What protects both me and the relationship?

You don't have to get it perfect.

You just have to notice.

Because every moment of awareness creates another opportunity to choose.

Protection Wolf™ says:“I need to protect myself.”

Love Wolf™ says:“I need to protect my relationship.”

And the goal isn't to destroy one wolf.

It's learning when to listen — and when to choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Protection Wolf™?

Protection Wolf™ is the Merkl framework's way of describing the protective part of us that can become activated when we feel hurt, threatened, rejected, unsafe or vulnerable.

It may show up through anger, blame, defensiveness, control, criticism, withdrawal, shutdown or other protective behaviours.

Its core message is:

“I need to protect myself.”

What is Love Wolf™?

Love Wolf™ represents a different response to vulnerability and threat.

Its core message is:

“I need to protect my relationship.”

It involves choosing connection, responsibility, empathy, honesty, repair and healthy boundaries without abandoning yourself.

Is Protection Wolf™ bad?

No.

Protection Wolf™ is not about being a bad person.

Protective reactions often develop because something important feels threatened.

The problem occurs when a protective strategy that once helped you begins damaging the connection you are trying to protect.

Does Love Wolf™ mean people-pleasing?

No.

Love Wolf™ does not mean agreeing with everything your partner says or sacrificing your needs.

Healthy boundaries, self-respect and relationship connection can exist together.

Why do I become defensive with my partner?

Defensiveness can be a protective response when you feel blamed, misunderstood, criticized, rejected or threatened.

Understanding the trigger can help you create more choice in how you respond.

Why do I shut down during relationship conflict?

Withdrawal or shutdown can be a way of protecting yourself when conflict feels overwhelming, unsafe or emotionally exhausting.

A regulated pause can be healthy.

Using withdrawal to punish, control or disconnect indefinitely can damage the relationship.

Can both partners have Protection Wolf™?

Absolutely.

Partners can trigger each other's protective responses, creating a cycle where both people become increasingly defensive, distant or reactive.

The goal is not to decide who is the Protection Wolf™.

The goal is to understand the pattern.

What should I do when my partner triggers me?

Start with your own reaction.

Pause if possible.

Notice what you're feeling.

Identify what you're afraid of.

Ask what you're trying to protect.

Then consider what response could protect both yourself and the relationship.

Does Love Wolf™ mean I should stay in my relationship?

No.

Love Wolf™ is not about staying at all costs.

It is about responding to relationship difficulties with awareness, responsibility, connection and healthy boundaries.

Can Protection Wolf™ and Love Wolf™ be used in couples counselling?

Yes.

The framework can provide simple language for identifying protective reactions, understanding relationship cycles and creating more intentional responses.

It can help shift the conversation from:

“Who's wrong?”

to:

“What's happening between us?”

🐺 ONE LAST QUESTION

Before your next reaction, ask yourself:

Which wolf am I feeding?

And then:

What would protect what matters most — without abandoning myself?

From Protection → Connection.

Start where you are.
