💔 Is My Relationship Over?

Maybe you're afraid you're losing the person you love.

Maybe you've asked your partner to get help, but they won't.

Or maybe you're the one thinking:

“Why am I so angry?”

“Why do I feel trapped?”

“Why do I keep thinking about leaving?”

“Do I even want to stay?”

You may want to save the relationship. Your partner may want more space.

One of you may fear losing the relationship. The other may fear losing themselves.

You don't have to decide everything today.

Your partner doesn't have to be ready for you to take the next step.

You can start alone. You can start together. You can start where you are.

When One Partner Wants Counselling—and the Other Doesn't

❤️ “Please don't give up on us.”

You've tried talking. You've tried giving space. You've tried getting closer.

You're tired of feeling like you're the only one trying.

You may be asking:

“What can I do if my partner won't go to counselling?”

You don't have to keep convincing them.

Start with what you can control.

🔥 “I don't know if I can do this anymore.”

Maybe you're angry. Maybe you're exhausted. Maybe you feel criticized, controlled or misunderstood.

You may be thinking:

“Why am I so angry?”

“Why do I feel trapped?”

“Why do I keep thinking about leaving?”

You may still love your partner.

You may simply be tired of how the relationship feels.

Both can be true.

You May Not Be Fighting Each Other

The argument underneath the argument may sound like:

“Come closer. I'm afraid I'm losing you.”

while the other person is saying:

“Give me space. I'm afraid I'm losing myself.”

One pursues. The other withdraws.

The more one reaches, the more the other pulls away.

You are not each other's enemy.

The pattern is.

Understanding the pattern does not excuse harmful behaviour.

It gives you something you can work on.

What Are You Really Protecting?

Sometimes both partners are protecting something important.

I may be protecting…

My partner may be protecting…

❤️ Connection

🕊️ Freedom

🛡️ Safety

🌿 Independence

🤍 Reassurance

🤝 Respect

💕 Feeling loved

🧭 Feeling like myself

🗣️ Being heard

🌙 Space

🔥 Intimacy

🌱 Autonomy

The problem isn't always what you're protecting.

Sometimes it's how you're protecting it.

Ask:

What are we protecting?

And:

Can we protect what matters without protecting ourselves from each other?

Before You Decide to Stay or Leave

You may be asking:

Should I stay?

Should I leave?

Is it too late?

You don't have to know yet.

Sometimes:

“I want to leave” means“I can't keep living like this.”

And:

“Please don't leave me” may mean“I don't know how to feel safe with you anymore.”

Understanding what's underneath the reaction can bring clarity.

You don't have to decide the whole future today.

A Different Question: Is It Working?

Couples can get stuck trying to prove:

I'm right. You're wrong. You started it. You hurt me first.

Try asking:

Is what we're doing working?

If it isn't:

What could I choose differently?

Choice/Reality Therapy focuses on practical questions:

What do I want?

What am I doing?

Is it working?

What can I control?

What will I choose next?

Five Questions to Get Unstuck

1. What do I want?

What kind of relationship and life do I want?

2. What am I doing?

What am I saying, avoiding, pursuing or withdrawing from?

3. Is it working?

Are my choices moving me toward what I want?

4. What can I control?

You cannot control your partner.

You can choose your actions, boundaries and responses.

5. What will I choose next?

You don't have to solve everything today.

Choose the next healthy step.

Clarity creates choice.

Responsibility Is Not Blame

Responsibility does not mean:

“Everything is my fault.”

It means:

“What is mine to own?”

You are not responsible for another person's choices, abuse, intimidation, coercion or harmful behaviour.

Safety and boundaries come first.

Responsibility means looking honestly at your own choices and deciding what you will do from here.

What relationship do we want to create?

From Protection → Connection

You don't have to figure everything out at once.

Start by understanding where you are now.

You Can Start Alone

Your partner does not have to be ready.

Individual relationship counselling can help you understand:

  • Your relationship pattern

  • Your reactions

  • What you are protecting

  • Your needs and boundaries

  • What you can control

  • What you want

  • Your next step

Starting alone does not mean giving up.

It means doing what is within your control.

If your partner becomes ready later, you can decide what comes next.

You Can Also Start Together

If both partners are willing, couples counselling gives you a structured place to slow things down and understand the pattern.

You don't have to:

  • Know what to say

  • Agree on everything

  • Stop being angry

  • Know whether you'll stay together

You simply need to be willing to look at what's happening.

What If I'm Thinking About Leaving?

You don't have to promise to stay.

You don't have to be talked out of leaving.

Ask yourself:

“Do I want to leave this relationship—or leave this pattern?”

Sometimes the answer is clear.

Sometimes it isn't.

Either way, understanding what is underneath the anger, distance or desire to leave can help you make a clearer decision.

Questions People Ask

What can I do if my partner won't go to counselling?

You can start by looking at what you can control. Individual counselling can help you understand the pattern, your choices and what you want to do next.

Can I go to marriage counselling without my partner?

Yes. You can begin individually even if your partner isn't ready.

Can one person change a relationship?

You cannot control your partner. But changing your own responses, boundaries, and participation in the pattern can change what you contribute to the relationship.

What if my husband or wife won't go to counselling?

You don't have to keep trying to convince them. You can start by understanding your own needs, boundaries and choices.

Why am I so angry at my partner?

Anger can protect deeper feelings such as hurt, fear, disconnection or feeling powerless. Understanding what the anger is protecting can create clarity.

Why do I keep thinking about leaving?

Sometimes the desire to leave reflects a need for change, safety, freedom, respect or connection. Understanding the pattern can help you determine what you really want.

Should I stay or leave?

There is no universal answer. Counselling can give you a place to understand what's happening and make an informed decision.
