When Love Feels Risky, Attraction Starts to Fade
Most couples don’t lose attraction because love disappears.
They lose attraction because love starts to feel emotionally unsafe to reach for.
At that moment, something subtle but powerful happens:
The person you love becomes the person your nervous system starts to protect itself from.
This is the central insight of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Sue Johnson.
We don’t fall out of love first. We fall into protection first.
And protection quietly replaces attraction.
Why We Are Afraid to Love
We are not actually afraid of love.
We are afraid of what happens when we need love and don’t receive it.
Underneath most relationship struggles are deeper emotional fears:
“I won’t matter to you.”
“I will be rejected if I show too much.”
“I will be alone in this relationship.”
“If I reach for you, I’ll feel worse, not better.”
So the nervous system makes a decision:
“Don’t reach. Protect instead.”
This is not a relationship problem first. It is an attachment survival response described in the work of John Bowlby.

Attraction Is Not Chemistry — It Is Nervous System Safety
A major misunderstanding in relationships is this:
Attraction is treated like chemistry when it is actually regulation.
When emotional safety is present:
the body relaxes
the mind softens
curiosity returns
affection becomes natural
desire can emerge
When emotional safety is lost:
the body tightens
defensiveness increases
emotional distance grows
desire shuts down
So attraction doesn’t vanish randomly.
It is regulated by one question:
“Is it safe to be emotionally open with you?”
The Fear Cycle That Replaces Attraction
Most couples don’t realize they are stuck in a repeating loop:
THE FEAR CYCLE
1. Disconnection happens. Something small: tone, stress, silence, misunderstanding
2. Protection activates
One partner protests or pursues
The other withdraws or shuts down
3. Emotional danger increases. Both partners now feel misunderstood
4. The bond feels unsafe. Even love starts to feel risky
5. Attraction declines, not because love is gone—but because closeness feels threatening
Fear doesn’t destroy love. It makes love feel unsafe to reach for.
The Faith Cycle (What Restores Attraction)
Now contrast that with what I call the Faith Cycle:
THE FAITH CYCLE
1. Emotional reach“I miss you… I don’t want us to be distant.”
2. Emotional responsiveness. I hear you. I’m here.”
3. Nervous system calming. Defensiveness lowers, openness increases
4. Emotional safety returns: “I matter to you even when things are hard.”
5. Attraction re-emerges. Warmth, desire, and closeness return naturally
This is not forced intimacy. It is restored attachment safety.
And when safety returns, attraction is often not rebuilt — it is uncovered again.
EFT Insight: Conflict Is Not the Problem
As EFT teaches, the problem is not conflict itself.
The problem is:
Disconnection during conflict.
Couples can disagree and still feel close.
But when conflict leads to emotional withdrawal, criticism, or shutdown, the bond stops feeling safe.
And when the bond stops feeling safe:
emotional openness disappears
sexual desire decreases
partners start living side-by-side instead of together
This is what EFT calls a negative interaction cycle.

Why Fear Kills Attraction Faster Than Problems Do
Most couples assume attraction fades because of:
stress
parenting
communication issues
resentment
routine
But the deeper driver is this:
The nervous system cannot experience desire toward someone it does not feel safe with emotionally.
Fear triggers:
protection
control
withdrawal
emotional narrowing
Faith (emotional safety) triggers:
openness
curiosity
warmth
desire
Attraction lives in openness, not protection.
A Clinical Example (Composite Case)
A couple came into counselling after 14 years together.
They said:
“We still love each other, but the attraction is gone.”
As we explored their pattern, something became clear:
She pursued an emotional connection when she felt distant
He shut down to avoid conflict and pressure
She felt abandoned
He felt criticized
Both felt alone in the relationship
What looked like “lost attraction” was actually:
A long-standing fear cycle that made emotional closeness feel unsafe.
As they learned to slow the cycle, name their emotions, and respond differently, something changed:
tone softened
defensiveness decreased
emotional contact increased
affection returned
attraction re-emerged gradually
Nothing was “recreated.”Safety returned — and attraction followed.
The Core EFT Truth About Love
EFT doesn’t say:
“Communicate better.”
It says:
“Create emotional safety so you can reach for each other again.”
Because the real question in long-term relationships is not:
“Do you love me?”
It is:
“Are you emotionally safe for me to love you with my whole heart?”
The Turning Point: Fear to Faith
Every relationship eventually comes to a crossroads:
Fear says:
“Protect yourself.”
Faith says:
“Risk reaching again.”
Fear creates distance that feels safe in the short term. Faith creates vulnerability that restores connection in the long term.
Attraction does not return through effort.
It returns through emotional safety that makes effort unnecessary.
